"Dear Sonny,
For 20 years your America's Youngest Jazz Band has
packed the hall at the Suncoast Dixieland Jazz
Classic with appreciative audiences. Your
directorship has produced world acclaimed musical
talent over the years and I applaud you for
this effort. As Festival Director of this annual
event, I always look forward to your band's
performances. The band has been one of the favorites
each year. Survey forms returned by our guests have
always requested that we invite the band back for
next year's festival!"

Jazz Classic, Clearwater, FL |

I've known
you for many years, Sonny. Since you have been
bringing "America's Youngest Jazz Band" to the
Suncoast Dixieland Jazz Classic, as well as Arbor
Records Jazz parties. You have done an amazing job
educating young, aspiring musicians, writing
arrangements for them, and giving them the
confidence that lasts a lifetime. As you reach your
85th birthday, I honor the exceptional person you
are Sonny, and I wish you many more years of
bringing joy to the music World!"

Sonny, my man, I just listened to your "Haunting
Sound Album". You sound soooo beautiful, sound and
phrasing: everything - a pleasure to hear! This is
an example of how to play a melody and improvise OFF
the melody - masterful - you are a living treasure -
you should be given the Medal of Freedom for the
work you have done with young people!"

Highest Award The National Endowment of the Arts "
Master of Jazz" - 2011 |
